Out now: Cultural Identity Development in Adult Forced Migrants – The Psychometrics of a Measure in Arabic, Spanish, and Ukrainian
I’m pleased to share a new publication in the International Journal of Intercultural Relations, co-authored with Débora B. Maehler, Nivedita Bhaktha, and Howard Ramos: “Cultural Identity Development in Adult Forced Migrants: The Psychometrics of a Measure in Arabic, Spanish, and Ukrainian.”
The research tested the Multigroup Ethnic and National Identity Measure (MENI) across three language groups (Arabic, Spanish, and Ukrainian). Using data on Syrian, Mexican, and Ukrainian forced migrants living in Canada. Results support the use of MENI for analyzing cultural identity and acculturation in diverse migrant populations.
This study draws on data collected in 2023 as part of the “Experiences of Refugee Youth and Families in Hard-to-Survey Areas” (ERYF-HAS) project, led by Howard Ramos (Western University) and me. We used Meta’s social platforms—Facebook and Instagram—to reach forced migrants across Canada, including those outside major cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. This allowed us to include refugees from smaller communities, providing a richer and more diverse dataset.
We are grateful to the Child and Youth Refugee Research Coalition (CYRRC) and Meta Platforms Inc. for funding this project.
